Police are treating a fire that broke out at a derelict hotel in Sandown during the early hours of this morning (Sunday) as suspected arson, it has been confirmed.
It was shortly after 04:00 this morning (Sunday) that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised appliances from Newport, Ryde, Sandown and Ventnor to the former Esplanade Hotel on Sandown seafront.
Smoke was issuing from the once-grand hotel, with the fire affecting the first, second and third floors.
A main jet, hose reel jets and an Aerial Ladder Platform were all used to extinguish the fire.

The fire service closed the incident by 07:30, but Police continued their presence.
It has now been confirmed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary that the fire is being treated as suspicious.
The Esplanade Hotel is currently subject to an enforcement notice issued by the Isle of Wight Council, which requires the owners to improve the property to acceptable standards.

\the owners should be sent the bill for the call out.
They certainly should, such a waste of the Emergency
services time.
I think it is time for the council to take immediate
control of these old derelict hotels.
Have them demolished and build social housing on the
sites.
Labour keep saying they are going to build more homes,
what better opportunity.
Do you know, when I first started reading this article, I thought, that’s suspicious.
I am a detective and didn’t know it.
