This week’s Isle of Wight Table Tennis Division 1 Match of the Week was between Newport Vics A and Ryde Raiders.
The 3 Premier League players of the Raiders – Martin Johnstone, Tim Giles and Rob Smith – met their match against Newport’s top team. Newport’s David Hilliam was crowned Player of the Match as he managed 3 wins out of 3, but his game against Ryde’s Martin Johnstone went to 5 sets and was a nail-biting thriller full of long rallies and superb attacking and defensive play.
Johnstone was the unluckiest player of the night losing another 5 setter against Newport’s Paul Freeborn by the narrowest of margins.
Division 2
Second-placed Havenstreet Locos drew with Rookley A in the match of the week with Rookley’s Carl Rye on top form, defeating Havenstreet’s Ian Loosemore in 5 sets, pushing Loosemore down to second place in the players’ averages.
There was a close match between Ryde teams Red Kites and Rascals which ended 6-4 to the Rascals, with the Rascals John Featherstone player of the match.
Division 3
In the battle at the top, Ryde Revellers met favourites for the title St Lawrence Lizards, and it was a thrilling tight match which ended 5-5 and put the Revellers to the top of the table with one more match to play in the first half of the season.
