A 27-year-old man from East Cowes has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of an 81-year-old woman in Newport town centre some 3 years ago.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Jordan Magee, of College Way, was driving a large JPC Demolition lorry near the junction of High Street and St James’ Square on 16th January 2023.
Tragically, Brigid O’Hara-Murray, from Totland, came into contact with the vehicle. She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics.
At the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday), it was heard that the defendant, then 24 from Bembridge, was operating a heavy goods vehicle and is accused of driving the vehicle in a manner that caused death by careless / inconsiderate driving.
The exact circumstances of how Mrs O’Hara-Murray ended up underneath the lorry remain unclear.
Mr Magee has been granted unconditional bail and will appear in The Isle of Wight Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 14th April this year.
