A head-on crash between 2 cars – with 1 driver trapped inside their vehicle – has forced the closure of Briddlesford Road in both directions this morning (Wednesday). Emergency services are on scene at the junction with Lynn Cross, where a Smart Two and a Hyundai Tucson have collided. The crash occurred just before 08:10. The elderly male driver of the Smart car remains in the vehicle and is currently being tended to by paramedics. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has several resources on scene, with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service also present. Police have closed the road between the junction with Havenstreet and Robin Hill Roundabout, with officers gathering eyewitness reports on what has happened. UPDATE @ 08:36 – The driver of the Smart is now out of the vehicle, having been assisted onto a stretcher by fire crews. A mother and 2 children in the Hyundai have escaped serious injury, but they are being checked over by paramedics for shock. Firefighters are working to make safe the hybrid Hyundai, which has sustained significant front end damage.
Briddlesford Road is expected to remain closed for at least another 60-90 minutes whilst recovery of both vehicles is arranged and debris is swept from the carriageway. UPDATE – The road has now re-opened in both directions. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says 2 people have sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash.
