Residents of a road in Haylands are still fighting the imposition of double yellow lines as they fear it could lead to an accident — although the Isle of Wight Council insists they aren’t budging.
The parking restrictions were approved for Mitchells Road by the Isle of Wight Council back in January and will be installed along the entire road despite more than 75 objections.
One concerned resident said it was already causing them anxiety as it would mean car users were looking for spaces that did not exist and would inevitably lead to an accident. They said it was going to ‘get silly’ as more cars were displaced around the neighbouring roads, but there was already a problem with few spaces to spare.
The Isle of Wight Council said a request was made to look at the safety of Mitchells Road by a member of the public.
An assessment was carried out by a road safety engineer who determined it should be reviewed for increased parking restrictions.
The council said it took into account the physical limitations of the carriageway and inappropriate parking which would impact emergency vehicles’ access to properties.
At the same meeting where parking restrictions for Mitchells Road were approved, other parking schemes were abandoned which the community were also against.
The resident of Mitchells Road said there was no issue with emergency vehicles accessing the road, which was emphasised at the end of last year when the fire service attended a property.
Mitchells Road meets a busy commuter cut-through, Upton Road, which has led to safety concerns for parents with children if they have to park on the busier road.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said it was recognised the restrictions will have an impact on households who own multiple cars but in this instance — where the extent of the highways is so physically limited — the detrimental impact to the safety of road users and households outweighed the need to allow uncontrolled parking.
The authority said if there are issues once the double yellow lines are installed, residents can report it which would be picked up in future reviews.

Double yellow lines are placed to make Roads safe for everyone.
Many persons think they can Park where they want.
Take Great Preston Road for example.
There are always vehicles parked on the pavement outside the old council houses
causing an obstruction to other motorists and pedestrians.
IW Council have a duty of care.
Place Double Yellow lines and anyone caught parking on them, fine them and tow them away.
Not left for the homelands of South Africa yet then? Still trying to use others names to stir? Cowardly way of trying to get what you want don’t you think?
All mouth no bottle using innocent neighbours to get the blame for you jealous wants.
Come round and have a chat next time.
Great Preston road is one of my favourite places to park, and it’s free. Get in!
Time for Permit parking then
What about blue badge holders you idiot?
That is fine if they are disabled, but they should not be allowed to block
Pavements so persons cannot walk safely along.
IW Council should adapt properties for blue badge holders to park
safely.
Just park your cars half way on the pavement like me and my daughter does.
We have avoided double yellows in Gt Preston rd, as we help slow traffic, and cause gaps in the traffic which aids those older people or special needs people who can’t always cross quickly in fast, never ending traffic.
Think of others as we both do.
Good point Windy.builderLo
I think I’ve seen the good work your vehicles do – are they to ones with the nice aftermarket alloy wheels?
The Twats at 90 Great Preston Rd are lawless individuals who think they can do what they want when it comes to parking.
Lack of Brains is the answer.
The Council should tow their vehickes away.
on benefits ? 75″ Tv in each room… Car each..??? hmmmm
Mitchells road is a single track road with no pavements
Thanks Mr M, for making our street safer, your daughter is so sweet, and with a hi-vis yellow car, all can see it so not a problem for us.
That council tenant from S.A is a bully, likely thinks still ordering the blacks around.
We are aware of how you have made the whole road safer, and slowed the traffic at great risk to damage to your lovely well kept vehicles. Thanks mate and ignore the mouth piece .
It appears that all builders are brainless
At least in S.A there are rules to Stop brainless morons doing wrong.
On the Island people are lawless
What a load of nonsense, it’s a pain in the ar*e for motorists using
Great Preston Road.
I would have that yellow Vauxhall Corsa towed away and crushed and
issue a fine for parking on the pavement.
Pavements are for pedestrians, and Roads should be kept free so traffic can
flow freely.
Where is the East Cowes Arsonist when you need him (or her)?
Double Yellow lines are coming due to selfish idiots like yourselves
not knowing right from wrong
Enjoy replacing wing mirrors, do you?
I detest pavement parkers. Always make sure the rivets on my jacket scrape along the paintwork as I go by. Pavements are for pedestrians, stop parking on them.
Dog leads are better
Keys are better
excuse me , so if you park half on pavement, what about pedestrians? Wheelchairs, and double baby buggies, let alone me trying to manoeuvre past on crutches…. Ignorant driver…next time I think my crutch may disrupt your wing mirror, or maybe scratch the paint… illegally parked, so it should NOT be there… simples..
Very true, it’s the only way to Stop idiots
Insurance wont pay out either as a car parked illegally, the onus is on the driver who parked. Smash it to pieces…
Chances are it won’t be insured.
No way should the council be bullied into changing their plans just to appease a bunch of geriatric moaners, who only use the car once a week to go to the blood clinic, or to have toe nails cut.
There are a lot of special needs adults and youngsters who are in peril whilst navigating betwixt parked cars on a very narrow street.
Think of those less fortunate than yourselves for once.
And Council get the large tin of yellow paint out, both sides need it badly.
Our cat was injured trying to cross between parked vans so please do hurry.
The Council don’t seem to know who’s in charge.
Why are you standing up for “special needs adults and youngsters” but not us. We have a right to be able to park on the highway outside our houses.
Joe because these unfortunates of life will never own, drive a vehicle of their own. Yet many are cumbersome, low iq, and disabled so a risk for them to walk.
Whereas you can walk to another road to collect your car, they have to brave the elements every day stumbling around. Many mongels have a short life, lets not make risking it being even shorter.
Think of others buy a coat and WALK to your car.
Or cycle? All you drivers unless electrified are simply destroying our planet and making the arabs richer so they can buy British passports and come rape us…
If there is no parking restriction then anyone has a right to park outside your house. If there is a parking restriction banning all parking then nobody has a right to park outside your house.
The fact that a stretch of public highway happens to go past your door confers you no special rights or privileges over it. The clue is in the name “public highway“.
While parking on a pavement is not illegal (outside of London), obstructing one is. If wheelchairs, pushchairs, mobility scooters, etc cannot get by you car you are committing an offence.
Well said, sadly so many drivers are brainless individuals who only
think of themselves not others.
IW Council and the Law are clueless when it comes to parking needs / rules.
NO you do not… You do not have to have a car.. Its like living in a desert and buying a canoe… stupid idiot…
Selfish ignorant drivers… must have a car, must park out front of house…who cares about those others that use the roads, and like how often would a Firetruck come hurtling down the road eh? Who cares anymore… certainly not car drivers…??
What gets me also is the people that park out front of their own driveway… that be brilliant if emergency services need to get to your home…
Ignorant car drivers.. no thought about others at all…
I have a driveway, and almost everyday, an ignorant driver parks so almost blocking half my drive… again IGNORANT car drivers…
They should be fined and towed away for blocking driveways and pavements.
Sadly common sense does not exist on the Island
Law and Council are clueless, they don’t even understand the laws.
Persons park on Zig Zags along Ryde Esplanade and Union Street
No one cares
Building work is being done along St John’s Road
Even though Double Yellow Lines are in place
van park their causing a congestion and the Law and Council turn a blind eye.
If Double Yellow lines are in place fine them or tow them away, builders are not
Emergency service vehicles.
Such work should take place late at night or with a Road closure organised
Due to a useless clueless MP and Council
There are NO Parking rules on the Island
Residents do whatever they want and no one stops them!
More double yellows please. Anywhere you like. Get some traffic wardens recruited on a commission basis and you’ll not be short of applications. I’d be up for it myself. Bodycam and stab-proof jacket of course in Ryde and Newport with all you psychos off your heads on every drug going.
Maybe there is a shortage of yellow paint, or it could be
Useless Island Roads representatives have no idea how to apply
Yellow lines.
They ain’t the brightest bunch.
They are good at sitting in vehicles
Eating, texting, vaping, smoking, chatting and reading newspapers.
Their work output is Crap, hence where all our council tax money is going.
Hang on, they think it will make it unsafe because people looking for a place to park will cause an accident??? So basically, we should let everyone part where they like because their driving is so bad it’s better than having them drive around looking for a place to park. The logic here does not add up.
