A fundraising team has raised £310 for Mountbatten hospice by completing their own half marathon, despite COVID restrictions dashing their initial plans.
The challenge came about when Jodi’s daughter said that she had signed up for the Cardiff Half Marathon, due to take place in October 2020. Jodi’s other daughter suggested the family should take part in the half marathon too, so in good spirit they all signed up.
The training began and they overcame injuries from blisters, sprains, strains, broken ribs – but then the event was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. They were very disappointed so decided to go ahead with their own event to raise money for Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight.
Amy from Cornwall, Zara, Andrew from Somerset and Jodi drove the calculated route and shortly set off. They had 2 water stations and vehicle support from Richard (Amy’s fiance) and Jodi’s partner. Andrew finished the 13.1 miles run in 1 hour and 44 minutes. Jodi finished in 2 hours and 44 minutes and Zara and Amy ran together finishing after 3 hours.
As most Islanders will know Mountbatten Hospice is a charity that cares for patients with any life-limiting condition and support their families.
Jodi said:
“They looked after my Dad and then my Mum in the final weeks and months of their life. Their care is gold standard both as an inpatient in the hospice and in the community. They took the stress and strain of caring for my mum at home so I could sit and enjoy time with her in the last few weeks rather than be physically tired from trying to be full-time care whilst working full time. All the staff; the cleaners, catering staff, and nursing staff are always smiling and reassuring in such difficult circumstances and our family will always be indebted to them.”
In total £310 was raised for Mountbatten Hospice and a further £46.25 in gift aid through givepenny.com and their challenge 100 campaign.
