GREENMOUNT VICTORIOUS IN ISLE OF WIGHT PRIMARY TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The Isle of Wight Table Tennis Association (IWTTA) held an Island Primary Schools Tournament at the Isle of Wight Table Tennis Centre last Friday (22nd March), with Ryde’s Greenmount Primary taking overall victory. Initially, 12 schools and 120 children took part in table tennis sessions throughout January and February at the centre, and the top schools were chosen to take part in the tournament. The teams taking part in the tournament were Godshill, Greenmount, Summerfields, Newchurch and Carisbrooke, who competed in teams of 4 with all teams playing each other in matches of 3  sets. Points were awarded for each set won. The winning team was Greenmount, with Newchurch 2nd and Summerfields 3rd. Alex Rorke, Chair of the IWTTA said:

“The Isle of Wight County Table Tennis Association is delighted with the success of this tournament, which we believe to be the first Isle of Wight Schools event. We hope that these youngsters will continue to play and develop their skills, and we thank the schools, their staff and parents for their support, as well as those who organised this event.”

Medals were presented by Elaine Mills (organiser) and 17 year old Ryan Cates (one of the Island’s top junior players).

In Division 2…

Division 2 Champions are confirmed as Newport Vics C, who have headed the table all season. Newport Vics C were held to a draw this week by Wootton Wanderers, with Wootton’s Alan Dennis and Guy Golbourn in particularly good form. However, Newport’s Charlie Stapeley was untroubled, winning all his matches in three straight sets, and is third in the players’ averages table with 86%, whilst team mate Lawrence Fo has been unbeaten all season and tops the table. Havenstreet Hooters are confirmed as runners up after an 8-2 victory over Ryde Lizards. With a pool of 5 players to choose from, Havenstreet’s team have all played well this season, with Paul White on 77% win average and Mike Prior on 81%. Division 2 Results:

In Division 3…

With Newport Vics D already confirmed as Champions, the race is on for the runners up spot in Division 3.  Ryde Retailers lie in 2nd place at present, 10 points ahead of Shorwell Spinners, who have 2 games in hand.  The teams will also be playing each other in what will be the crunch match of the season for both teams. This week, the Spinners beat Ryde Frogs 7-3, whilst the Retailers matched their score against Ryde Rustics – twice, as they were catching up on postponed matches. Division 3 Results:
