South Wight Area Youth Partnership (SWAY) are planning another activity challenge for young people and friends of the charity – this time a geocache!
SWAY’s success with their ‘Hike at Home’ event has resulted in a demand for another opportunity to bring people together safely whilst restrictions are still in place.
The organisation will set a geocaching course across the South Wight. From Monday 15th June, teams of 2 to 3 have to find hidden objects using the grid references and descriptions for the exact locations that have been given to them. Once the object is found, they will need to take a photo of themselves with it as evidence of their success in finding it and email this to the SWAY office, before the closing date of Sunday 21st June.
The idea is to get out and about to overcome any anxiety of the outside by exploring the countryside in search of the objects. It will also serve to bring all the participants together with a sense of community but also following social distancing recommendations.
SWAY runs youth activities and supports young people and families across the South Wight. Even though the youth groups are unable to meet in the villages right now, they continue virtually. Young people are able to come together and communicate with each other and the youth workers. The 1-1 mentoring and family work continues as required, although it is not able to offer the full range of services.
Andy Dorning, Lead Youth Worker says:
“We all enjoyed the ‘Hike at Home’ so much that we wanted to do something else with the young people and friends. So we came up with this idea. This challenge gives us the opportunity to be outside safely but keep the sense of us all being in this together, whilst providing the element of competition”.
Everyone will be able to keep up with progress through the week via SWAY’s website and Facebook page. On Monday 22nd June the team that has found the most caches will be awarded a prize at the Zoom closing ceremony.
