A Cowes gardener who was stopped by Police on a residential road in Newport was found to be drug driving.
Tony Hewitt, 59, of Arctic Road in Cowes, pleaded guilty to drug driving with THC in his system when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (25th August).
Prosecuting, Lauren Stone told the court that on the morning of 6th May, at around 09:25, officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary stopped Hewitt – whilst he was driving his Mitsubishi pickup – along Caesars Road in Newport.
Once stopped by Police, Hewitt immediately admitted that he had smoked some cannabis the night before. This was confirmed during a roadside drugs wipe. A further test at Newport Police Station returned a reading of 4.7ug/l – the legal limit for THC – a cannabis breakdown – is 2.0ug/l.
Hewitt has 26 previous convictions and was last sentenced for a motoring offence back in 2010.
Defending, Nicholas Muir said that his client had smoked cannabis for years but since the incident had completely stopped.
Hewitt was handed a 12-month driving ban. He was ordered to pay costs of £85.

Island police are f*cling scum they just drive around pulling random harmless people over absolute joke that’s why they get laughed at by mainland police embarrassing to the force
I came here to make a joke about a gardener and weed, but I have decided not to do that and to respond to your comment in its place.
You think that the police are pulling random harmless people.? The story says Hewitt has 26 previous convictions.! 26.!
We can be pretty sure that his life on this planet has not benefited the community that he has lived in.
People who have a high number of convictions usually also have a high number of offences which they have not been caught for too. I am sure that many people on the island will be pleased after reading this story.
The mainland police won’t be laughing at the island police for taking a drug driver off of the roads, think again.
You big fool you have not got a clue , embarrassing for you to think that , there just doing a good job well done island police
Those that are harmless just go on their way,but as we see many times some turn out scum and criminals with no care to others and no value to society. Don’t know why police don’t do random whole road stops like used to do for censuses etc . More ilegal drivers off road is better for all. We take it you are one of them?.
You are a complete bell end and you are probably one of these idiots that thinks its ok to drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, try putting your brain in gear before putting mouth in overdrive
Another drugged driver off the road – good stop Hant & IW Police.
You a pot head just like me that’s embarrassing
59 years of age, should know better.
Some people need to grow up.
Hewitt immediately admitted that he had smoked some cannabis the night before. Yes and then the three bears eat all my porridge.
One caught! Hundreds if not more getting away with it! Random stops needed. If you don’t break the law, you have nothing to fear.
By 2025 cannabis will be legal to use. If it was legal for the last twenty years Tony wouldn’t have much of a criminal record at all. Many countries around the world have legalised it with positive impact. The UK will follow suit. Consider how many people are driving around after taking prescribed painkillers, antidepressants, ADHD meds, sedatives and so on, all of which impact on a persons ability to drive safely. If it was illegal to drive while taking meds that are known to have an impact on perception half the IOW would be banned.
