South Western Railway has confirmed Island Line services will continue during strike action this week, between 31st July and 5th August.
An hourly service will run between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin until 5th August.
The rail provider has advised customers should only travel if their journeys are absolutely necessary. Anyone wishing to travel during the affected period should check their entire journey using journey planners as other train operators will also be affected.
Stuart Meek, South Western Railway’s Chief Operating Officer, has said:
“I am sorry to say that strike action by the RMT union and industrial action by the ASLEF union will affect our services in the coming weeks.
“On Saturday 29th July, strike action by the RMT union will mean that we will operate a significantly reduced service with large parts of our network closed. Customers should only travel if their journeys are absolutely necessary. Customers should also note the times of the last trains of the day, which will be much earlier than usual.
“A ban on overtime working by the ASLEF union will then affect our network between Monday 31st July and Saturday 5th August. A reduced timetable will operate across our network, and customers should check before they travel.
“We have started planning for the ASLEF union overtime ban that will take place between Monday 7th and Saturday 12th August. Services during this period will be announced in due course.

So it’s not a strike? They are just turning down overtime.
If a business can’t operate its normal timetable without it’s staff doing overtime. The business is understaffed

Get on with it trains were ended for good reason, they are rarely where you want to get on, or off, and they dictate what time you get to your destination, IF at all now.

I got on a train on Saturday from the esplanade to Shanklin, absolutely full and standing throughout the journey. So the line is used, stop being a troll and a keyboard warrior. Maybe you should get a job

Why the HOURLY service then?!
When COVID came along in March 2020 all the foreign owned Train Operating Companies (TOC’s) said they could no longer afford to run their franchises and handed control back control to the Department For Transport (DFT).
The taxpayer has bailed out the TOC’s with much of the funds going to shareholders abroad – in the meantime the staff have continued to work yet have had no increase in their pay since 2019.
The Government through the DFT is making no effort to resolve this impasse (last negotiations were back in January), instead are funding TOC’s to cancel services as the TOC’s don’t employ enough staff relying on voluntary overtime to cover the timetabled service.
– Don’t be fooled into blaming the workforce for the company’s failings.
It’s NOT a strike – it’s industrial action short of a strike.
ASLEF are instructing it’s members not to do overtime in an attempt to bring the Department For Transport (DFT) back to the negotiating table as they have not received an increase in pay since 2019.
In the meantime these politicians have received an increase in pay each and every year and now receive £86,000pa plus expenses – but that’s never mentioned.
