Horsebridge Hill – the main road between Newport and Cowes – has now fully closed in both directions for the weekend to allow for essential sewer connection works linked to the Three Oaks housing development.
The closure began at 20:00 tonight (Friday) and will remain in place until 06:00 on Monday morning (30th June).
A second full weekend closure will follow from 20:00 next Friday (4th July) until 06:00 on Monday 7th July, to allow for resurfacing.
The road is being fully excavated during both phases, meaning no through traffic can pass. However, access to properties and businesses along Newport Road is being maintained. All other vehicles must divert via Forest Road, Whitehouse Road, Rolls Hill and Pallance Road.
The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that the Floating Bridge will start 1 hour earlier at 05:30 on Sunday (29th June) and Sunday 6th July to support connections with the 06:30 Red Funnel ferry.
Southern Vectis has confirmed that during the closure, Route 1 will serve St Mary’s Hospital in both directions from/to Forest Road using the normal diversion to Cowes/Newport.
A shuttle service that will loop from Cowes to Chapel Corner using Noke Common to face in the right direction without drivers having to reverse. Space will be limited on the shuttle.
This weekend’s closure follows weeks of one-way restrictions, which are due to conclude next month. The temporary diversions have drawn criticism, with reports of congestion and long delays.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time and follow the signed diversion.
