Last Weekend marked a special milestone at Freshwater Bay Golf Club as nearly 30 young golfers took part in the very first competition for the club’s newly launched Junior Academy.
Held on a sunny Saturday afternoon (21st June), the juniors competed in the Captain’s Challenge Cup flag competition – a fun format that tested how far each player could progress around the course using a set number of strokes.
The event was organised by Head Coach James Veal and Assistant Daniel Holmes, with support from junior coordinators Paula Burke, Peter Bonnell, and Pieter Sheldon. Several club members also volunteered to accompany players throughout the day.
Amelie Callender emerged as the overall winner, lifting the inaugural Captain’s Challenge Cup. Harry Holmes finished in second place, followed by Alfie Luff in third.
Club Captain Bill Evitts presented the awards and said he was “very pleased with the turnout and the standard of play.”
He added:
“It was wonderful to see so many juniors enjoying the game and representing the future of the club.”
This event is the first of many planned for the Junior Academy, with further competitions and coaching opportunities expected to build momentum for junior golf on the Isle of Wight.
