Former Islander Barbara White has published her debut memoir ‘A Tale of Two Yachts’.
In what is her first book, Barbara describes her and husband Rob’s voyage to New Zealand in 2015 on their elderly sailing yacht Zoonie. It offers an insight to lands and lives afar, reflecting on what it means – and takes – to commit to such a challenging expedition afloat.
This is a tale of 2 couples with a shared love for life and for the sea. Barbara compares her epic voyage with that of Norwegian couple Erling and Julie Tambs, who had sailed from their hometown on a similar westwards route 87 years before. The fate of the 2 yachts is determined by the elements, something that no sailor – no matter how advanced their technology or developed their skills – can control.
Barbara has said:
“Since I have always valued the comparative approach to topics worthy of study, I decided that comparing the two voyages for like and unalike would give my readers a more interesting and enjoyable experience as they follow our journeys.”
Barbara has a sailing blog, blog.mailasail.com/zoonie, and website, skipperbarbwhite.com. She has written travel pieces for Yachting Monthly, Yachting World, Sailing Today and Practical Boat Owner.
