A former school cleaner from Ryde has admitted masturbating live on a video call to someone he thought was a 14-year-old child.
James Grant, 45, of St Thomas’ Street in Ryde pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child and causing a child aged 13 to 15 to watch/look at an image of sexual activity when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday).
Prosecuting, Lauren Stone told the court that in August 2022, using an online messaging application called RandoChat, Grant reached out to a female called ‘Jorja’ – which was in fact a fake account used by an online child abuse activist group posing as a 14-year-old girl.
At some point after the initial contact was made, Grant and the person he was speaking to exchanged ages before sending pictures of one another’s faces. The picture sent by ‘Jorja’ was in fact a heavily edited picture of an adult.
Over the next few months, daily conversations took place between the pair. Initially of a normal nature, the conversations quickly changed and Grant began talking about more sexual subjects with the ‘minor’. The chat moved to WhatsApp where Grant attempted to set up a video call with the girl. Grant was intending to show himself masturbating, something that he did live on a call not long after.
The video in question showed the 45-year-old laying on a bed masturbating. There was no video footage shared by the account posing as ‘Jorja’.
Sometime later, in December 2022, those behind the ‘Jorja’ account came to the Island and approached Grant, He made immediate admissions to them with the Police opening an investigation shortly after.
Across the 4 or so months that Grant and ‘Jorja’ were talking, a total of 43 images of an explicit nature were sent by the 45-year-old.
Currently unemployed, Grant previously worked as a cleaner at a school, the court heard.
Defending, Amy Hosell said that her client deserved full credit for pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.
Magistrates deemed their sentencing powers insufficient and adjourned the case to the Isle of Wight Crown Court to be heard on 13th September.
Grant was released on conditional bail and was ordered to sign the Sexual Offenders Register by visiting Newport Police Station within 3 days.

How can Amy Hosell defend this man !!! Shame on her
court appointed lawyer I suspect and duty bound to provide the accused with a defence, even if her own personal view is that he is a filthy scumbag that needs shooting.
As a legal professional, I doubt she thinks he should be shot!
