The next phase of the St Mary’s junction improvement scheme in Newport is now underway, resulting in Forest Road becoming one-way to all traffic for the next 3 months.
The plan had been to pause works to avoid conflict with the Isle of Wight Festival and examinations taking place at the college, however, with both cancelled the works on Medina Way on the southbound exit from St Mary’s roundabout, the bus link to Hunnyhill and to connect Forest Road to Parkhurst Road have been brought forward.
From today (Monday), motorists are unable to travel from St Mary’s Roundabout onto Forest Road (heading West), however, the road remains open for those heading into Newport on Forest Road from the West Wight. The one-way restriction is likely to be in place for the next 10-12 weeks – late August.
The westbound diversion will be via Medina Way/St Georges Approach/Trafalgar Road/Carisbrooke Road/Gunville Road with the previous temporary parking restrictions once again put in place in Carisbrooke Road.
Once this phase of works have been completed, activity will shift to creating the signal-controlled junction in place of St Mary’s roundabout and improvements to Hunnyhill.
It is hoped the scheme will be completed by the end of 2020.

What a ridiculous time of year to do this , Traffic in Newport will be horrific. Couldn’t they have waited until November if they must waste money on this ridiculous scheme rather than keeping loos and libraries open
