Specialist police officers from the mainland are carrying out a forensic examination in Newport after a cyclist was found with serious injuries, which has resulted in them being flown to Southampton’s Major Trauma Unit.
It was just before 17:00 this afternoon (Monday) that emergency services were called to Furrlongs on Newport’s Pan Estate, after a cyclist was found with significant injuries near to the local shop, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The injured party has since been flown to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for further treatment.
Police have locked down the area with cordons in place between Manor Crescent and Royal Exchange as investigations into the circumstances of the road traffic incident continue.
The Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland has been drafted in to conduct a full, forensic examination of the immediate area – indicating there may be more to the situation than initially thought by officers.
Furrlongs remains closed and is likely to be shut to all traffic for the rest of this evening.
An update is expected from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary on Tuesday morning.
UPDATE TUESDAY – A 63-year-old man from Godshill has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
