A 63-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving as a local cyclist fights for his life in hospital after an alleged hit-and-run in Newport yesterday afternoon (Monday).
Emergency services were alerted at 16:37 to reports of an incident involving a red electrically-assisted pushbike on Furrlongs, Pan, near the local shops.
Paramedics arrived on scene to discover a 44-year-old man from Newport with serious injuries, resulting in the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance being scrambled to the Isle of Wight.
The cyclist has since been flown to Southampton General Hospital, where it is understood he is in a critical condition and on life support.
Last night a forensic examination of the crash scene was carried out by the Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland, with investigators working for several hours to piece together the events that led to the local man being seriously injured.
As investigations continue, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now confirmed that a black Ford Transit van is thought to have collided with the cyclist. This has led to a 63-year-old man from Godshill being arrested on suspicion of causing serious injuries by dangerous driving.
He remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.
Police say that the vehicle suspected of being involved did not stop at the scene.
Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this incident with officers now appealing for anyone who witnessed this collision, and anyone with relevant dash cam, CCTV or doorbell camera footage to get in touch.

Don’t know facts like everyone else and don’t know if this was relevant in this case but cyclist need lights on from 4pm at the moment. See so many often dressed in dark clothing with no lights late afternoon and early morning. Be scene or except this sort of thing may happen to you.
Exactly that. If he had no lights on, like many of them don’t, and if he was wearing dark clothes, like many of them do, how can the driver be to blame. All too easy to blame him because it is easier. Check the cyclists clothes, check if he had lights before putting the blame on motorists again
In the good old days plod would stop cyclists who rode
with no lights, nowdays there is not enough plod to do such.
They used to control and patrol traffic too.
