A footpath through the woods at East Cowes Esplanade has been closed due to the appearance of a large crack, which suggests that the land could give way at any moment.
Locals are being advised to avoid the area and adhere to the closure in the interests of safety as movement is clearly evident.
The slip is near the swing tree, a popular place for young people to play.
Councillor Karl Love, who represents East Cowes, has suggested that nobody goes into the woods at all beyond the steel gate by the public toilets.
It was 9 years ago that a sloped piece of land backing onto the Esplanade at East Cowes started to move, with the dead-end road eventually being completely covered by large amounts of earth at the end of April 2014. Then, 4 years later, another 40ft section gave way, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The Isle of Wight coastline is incredibly unstable at the moment with recent land movement along Military Road, at Luccombe and between Shanklin and Sandown.

Do not worry folks, the council will close it, deem it safe tomorrow and then close it agian several days later, they know exactly what their doing, reminds me of dads army.
Clowncil strikes yet again.
Esplanade “,in modern usage, the space that allows the area to be paved as a pedestrian walk” yet pavement in East Cowes is super crap full of holes and cracks, and 80% of space is taken by cars anyway (so it’s more like just a road, not an esplanade), aaaand now the only space that doesn’t have cars (past steel gate) is off-limits.
I mean… why we can’t have anything nice and normal? It’s like we’re producing jokes on purpose here so architecture students can use UK in puns over a pint in a pub 😀
It’s the Isle of Wight. They repair pavements where not many walk, and leave pavements to rot on well trodden paths.
The gated road beyond the toilets is still open, it’s the woods beyond the toilets that are closed!
Well there’s a bloke on here who thinks gabion cages are the solution to everything. So let’s see whether they can hold the landslip at bay. I know who my money is on.
Seems that most money is spent here on funding the tax credit kept families in free homes, paying their c.tax, and their numerous children’s school meals, transport, uniforms, to be able to provide money for those who do work full time to have any pleasures now.
Needs to be tightened up to make having a child cost the parent or rarely now parents, rather than the tax payers.
Then their would be more fund in council coffers for such footpath improvments.
As it is those who take the most and add the most spongers for the next generation to fund, have their money ring fenced so cut backs never ever effect them, so they don’t care.
Unfortunately it’s all down to the very poor educational standards on the Island, me being a ovener if you like, I was appalled at the Islands POOR education on offer – they will go on sponging and yes they don’t care because they are not taught to care. Once you leave the comfort your affluent society and move in poorer circles it is very evident it is down to a poor upbringing and poor education. I have been following the so called elected councillors and it pains me to say, I think we need to employ the best money can by rather than using nepotistic behavior to employ our councillors. The MORAL of this story is WE NEED THE BEST!!!
IOW Council let every Tom, Dick n Harry on the Mainland apply for hsing. Winning Deadline was always midnight…all ‘Working class’ were in their beds at that time, leaving way for the Country’s lowlifes to descend. Thank God they saw sense albeit too late. We should be more like the channel islands
What’s this crap your spouting got to do with a land slip ?
Why stop there, why not just stick all the so called spongers in a concentration camp,
and give them a nice hot shower ?
Dr, yes the truth can be a little hard to swallow if you or your families lifestyle choice is being criticised on a public forum.
The issue and link being that the growing amount of ‘muvers’ claiming tax credits, which then gives free rent and council tax means ‘they’ pay in nothing, so could not care less how much it ‘goes up’ each year as they just ‘save’ more, but, more importantly WE have to then fund their part time (if at all) 16 hrs p.w work.
This means our taxes are used to fund those breeding the next generation of spongers rather than the money used for urgent repairs to infrastructure and footpaths etc.
As said, oft is is ‘their’ children who destroy and cost others the most.
Savvy?
Question : If you are born into a poor family, would you…..
A. Work 60 hours a week to pay a rich Landlord for the privilege of having a roof over your head and know that you will never have the privilege of having children becouse you can’t afford child care, and then work yourself into an early grave pennyless.
B. Fcuk the System and grab every benifit that you are entitled to, whilst watching the rich people fcuk the same System but on a much larger scale.
C. Do nothing and just grow bitter and twisted and jealous and know your place in society, whilst looking down on people for trying to enjoy just a little bit of life,
whilst also looking up at certain people with envy.
I was born into a poor family.
I did work 6 days a week, stayed living with my parents and saved hard.
Got a mortgage and bought a flat which I sold ten years later for 90k more. I did the place up myself.
Today, people wait for nothing. So they meet, girls pregnant, get onto housing list, gain a subsidised home, pretend they don’t live together, she claims single parent allowance so gains more in benefits, he may work, or deal, or grow, she may do a few legit hours and get the rest made up in benefits, rent and c tax heavily subsidised.
NO I don’t ‘blame’ the spongers doing it.
I blame the Government for being so thick in allowing it to happen.
All we are creating is a vile society, or have you not noticed THAT?
Yes, i have noticed,
I have noticed that ‘normal hard working people’ can not afford a deposit for a morgage, let alone paying the vast intrest rate on the morgage itself.
Not all people are lucky enough to have an option to live with mummy and daddy.
Some people have not got parents/grand parents, who were lucky enough to purchase a home for 200 pound, or buy there own council house off Thatcher ect.
IMO
It’s the Boomers who have had it easy, and also do most of the moaning !
Hahaha lived with parents to save like that’s an option for a 21st century child, get a grip woman! We’d be in bloody zimaframes by the time we could of possibly fathomed a deposit for a house. People need help and its tight pockets like yours that add to the stereotypical nonsense you are ejaculating. I have no hopes on ever owning a house until you and you’re generation have died but by then we’d of killed each other because you get all bitter when a person needs help. Do it your self you say well when the tables have turned I will gladly repeat you’re lines.
Listen DR I and my wife were brought up by our HARD working parents. Me one of 8 and my wife one of 8. Not once did our parents become a burden on the community financial wise. We all left home got jobs and contributed to the community. Not always doing the jobs we liked but we worked. The spongers are there in their droves and I for one know that most do not want to work instead choosing to breed.
I think what they are trying to say in a very destructive way is that there is now an inbalance between those that work for their living and pay their taxes and those that choose not to and still work on the side so as not to affect their benefits, I thnk it was last week that the government issued figures that showed that over 50% of the adult population are now in receipt of benefits even though there are 1.5 million job vacancies, Support for those in need is a basic requisite for a civilised society however there are countless that use benefits as a life choice.
I’m with Jollop, what the hell is your spouting got to do with a landslip. You can’t improve a landslip footpath, it won’t be there soon!!!
Hey, just a minute, what do you mean? Dad’s Army were very clever, especially when compared to our council. Maybe if we were to offer Capt. Mainwaring the magical £138K we would actually get somewhere.
WTF are some people on here going on about? The story relates to landslips not benefit bashing.
MONEY, if it is spent on spongers it isn’t available to repair, create and maintain footpaths.
The funds then have to be increased for those who DO pay c.t
THAT is the ‘connection’.
Think
I find you’re comments poisonous and reductive. You would have never survived in my shoes, people like you infuriate me with you’re self righteous belief that you are better than most and what’s worse is you had parents. Aye I have a chip on my shoulder about family but you didn’t create the life you have now it was them for allowing you to stay with them when you should have left the nest. Sanctimonious you are and you offer nothing productive to society because you dont want to input. I’m happy for my taxes to go to benefits, sponges or not I care only that people have something even if it is a needle in the arm or a bottle of wine I sleep better knowing I did what I could and what they do with it it’s on them.
I personally blame the people parking on the pavement outside the council houses on Great Preston Road for this environmental hazard. Shame on you.
