The Environment Agency have announced plans to spend more than £1million on improving flood defences at Monktonmead Brook, Ryde.
The area, which includes The Strand and the Esplanade was notorious for flooding before the Monktonmead Pumping Station was created. Despite improvements in the area, there have been a number of flood alerts in place since the beginning of this Winter, with the Fire Service required on a number of occasions to assist in pumping away flood water.
The work, which will protect some 200 homes, is set to begin in 2014-2015 and is currently in the appraisal stage.
Further East, Embankment Road in Bembridge will see additional flood defences also put in place, should finances be confirmed for the work.
