A flood alert has been issued for the Eastern Yar, with the Environment Agency warning that flooding is possible between Whitwell and Bembridge from today (Thursday).
Following 22mm of rainfall on Wednesday, river levels have risen and may lead to localised flooding across parts of the East Wight.
Areas that could be affected include Golf Links Road, Moreton Common Road, and ditches around Fort Holiday Park, which may struggle to drain while river levels remain high. Light rain is expected to continue throughout the day.
The Environment Agency has said that flood risk is expected to reduce in Sandown by around 01:00 on Friday 23rd January. In the meantime, teams are monitoring conditions and operating the Bembridge sluices to manage water flow.
Motorists are reminded never to drive through flood water. Just 30cm of fast-flowing water is enough to move a vehicle.
The Environment Agency says this alert will be updated by 11:00 on Friday or sooner if conditions change.
