UPDATED: The Environment Agency have issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar overnight.
In the very early hours of this morning some 25mm of rain fell in a short space of time. At Budbridge, near Merstone, the river has just peaked. Levels will continue to rise through Alverstone and Langbridge until approximately 09:00 and won’t peak at Sandown until early afternoon.
The river will peak at a much higher level than it was on Monday, but impacts are still expected to be relatively minor, affecting low lying land, access tracks and small roads.
Further heavy showers are forecast for Hampshire and Isle of Wight overnight tonight and into Friday morning so residents should remain prepared for flooding.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Following dry weather overnight, river levels are returning to normal and the risk of flooding has receded.
At Sandown the level started to fall early this morning and the initial rate of fall will be slow. It will take some hours before the level is low enough for water ponded on land and in ditches to begin to drain effectively.
No rain is forecast today (Friday), some showers are expected to cross the catchment on Saturday, followed by small amounts of rain from Sunday to Tuesday. The rainfall anticipated over the next 5 days is not expected to cause significant flooding problems.
