FLASH FLOODING HITS THE ISLAND

floodingbradingUPDATED: Flash flooding has struck the Island this evening (Tuesday) leaving many arterial roads flooded and some home owners without electricity. 

The bout of rain swept from the south at around 20:00 after a series of lightning strikes in the skies above. Within minutes main roads were becoming flooded, especially on corners and roundabouts.

Avenue Road, Sandown and Sandown Road in Lake became impassable before the rain eased and water levels subsided, alongside Lake High Street.

In Ryde, one lane of the carriageway is said to be flooded at the bottom of East Hill Road and flooding returned to Binstead Hill.

firemortonProperties in the Morton Marsh area of Sandown have been left without electricity tonight after an electrical fire at Morton Brook, attended to by Shanklin Fire Station.

Meanwhile, firefighters from Sandown were called to Brading High Street after a raised drain cover threatened properties lining the road. Thankfully, the flooding had subsided before the crew’s arrival.

At the same time, fire crews from Ryde were called to Green Lane in Lake, however thankfully were not required.

treedownundercliffUPDATE @ 22:45 – Homes in Niton village have been effected by the flooding this evening with fire crews using pumping equipment to remove water from the local properties.

Contractors are also working to clear a fallen tree on Undercliff Drive, Niton, which is partially blocking the carriageway.
