UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport this afternoon (Monday).
3 appliances are on scene at Parkhurst Road, alongside the Aerial Ladder Platform from Newport.
Patients inside the hospital are being ‘held’ in the wards, with initial reports coming through that some areas are being evacuated.
It is understood the response has been sparked by an alarm activation.
UPDATE @ 15:20 – The alarm system is said to have been reset and doors to the wards have been reopened.
Fire crews are checking the hospital for any signs of fire.
UPDATE @ 15:55 – It has been confirmed that an air conditioning unit brought in smoke from outside the hospital into the main building, prompting fears of a fire.
No fire has been located and crews have now left the scene.
