FIRE SERVICE CALLED TO SINKING BOAT

UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance on Embankment Road in Bembridge this afternoon (Wednesday), where a boat has begun to sink.

The house boat ‘Fairmile C’ is taking on water as a result of an on board pump failing. According to the home owner, the pump failed sometime after Monday.

1 fire appliance from Ryde is on scene with a crew of 5 having been called to the incident at 13:45.

Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team are also on scene.

There is no signs of pollution and there is no risk to life.

UPDATE @ 15:50 – Despite the best efforts of fire crews, coastguard officers and Bembridge Harbour Master, the vessel has sunk and is now resting on the mud below. Pumping efforts have failed with water flowing into the 1940s vessel quicker than it can be pumped out.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and HM Coastguard are withdrawing from the incident and the situation is being left in the hands of the owner and Bembridge Harbour.
