UPDATED: Two pumping appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are this afternoon (Thursday) in attendance at a Island primary school following reports of a strong smell of gas.
Firefighters from Newport and Ventnor are currently on the scene at Niton Primary School and are assessing the situation to ascertain if a gas leak is present and if so, where.
It is understood all children have been safely evacuated from the building.
UPDATE @ 13:35 – Having established that the school is not connected to a gas main, fire officers have said that a moving gas cloud could be to blame for the smell of gas experienced by staff.
Pupils have been allowed to return to normal lessons and fire crews have now left the scene.
