UPDATED: Emergency services are attending a road traffic collision between Arreton and Apse Heath this evening (Tuesday), which has resulted in the closure of the main road in both directions.
Fire crews are working to extricate the occupant of what is thought to be a Honda Civic. The roof of the car has been cut off and firefighters are working alongside paramedics to free the casualty..
The incident has taken place outside Wight Salads on the main Sandown to Newport road and has not involved any other vehicles. Emergency crews were called to the scene at 21:50.
Motorsts are being diverted locally, however The Downs Road closure is resulting in all traffic diverting via Godshill.
Southern Vectis buses are diverting via Godshill until further notice, according to the bus operator.
UPDATE @ 22:50 – A 25-year-old male has been freed from his vehicle – a red Honda Civic Type R – and is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance.
His injuries are not thought to be serious.
The road remains closed.
UPDATE @ 23:05 – Fire crews from Sandown and Newport are now standing down from the incident having successfully extricated the casualty.
The vehicle is being recovered by Stag Lane Motors, however the road remains closed.
The road is expected to reopen within the next 30 minutes or so.
UPDATE @ 23:30 – The scene has now been cleared and the road has been reopened in both directions.
