Firefighters from Ryde have attended a chip shop in Brading this morning (Monday) following fears the building had caught fire.
A neighbour called 999 to report what they thought was smoke issuing from the roof of the terraced property in the High Street at just before 11:40, however fire crews have now established that the smoke was in fact steam.
The owner of ‘Brothers’ – which is closed on a Monday – had been cleaning the ranges with hot water, which in turn sent steam up the main extraction flue.
The observant and quick-thinking neighbour has been praised for alerting the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to the potential fire.
Having ascertained there is no fire or risk, the two pumping appliances from Ryde Fire Station have now left the scene and returned to station.
