A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire at a property in Newport this morning (Wednesday).
Emergency services were called at 04:08 to reports of a fire at a residential address on Fairlee Road, as first reported by Island Echo.
3 fire crews from Newport and East Cowes were mobilised to the scene, alongside an Aerail Ladder Platform, with the situation quickly brought under control using a hose reel and 2 breathing apparatus sets.
Island Echo can reveal that the incident is being treated as arson with specialist fire investigation dogs from the mainland called in to assist with ongoing enquiries.
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that a 22-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, as well as criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.
He remains in custody at this time.
Police officers remain at the property this afternoon with forensic investigators from both Hampshire Constabulary and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service in attendance.
What an evil thing to do.
