The quick actions of a member of staff at a support living home in Ryde have been praised by the fire service, after a small kitchen fire broke out this lunchtime (Wednesday).
It was just before 12:20 that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a fire developing at the Marigold Royale on Great Preston Road.
Classifying the incident as a ‘persons reported’ fire, due to the nature of the premises, multiple resources were mobilised to the scene.
Thankfully, the oven fire was out upon arrival of the first crews, but the kitchen was inspected to ensure it had been fully extinguished.
Island Echo is told that a member of staff did the right thing and that her actions quickly brought the situation under control.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has mobilised an ambulance crew and operational commander to the scene, but no injuries are thought to have been sustained. Paramedics have, however, entered the home to check on the welfare of those involved.
The incident has now been stood down.

Once again I have to ask “what exactly is an Operational Commander?” We seem to have herds of these folk who turn up for everything from a sprained ankle to a critical incident driving their shiny ‘Commander cars’ and doing err Commander things. Do our Ambulance service have so much money they have to buy staff and vehicles, or are our paramedics in need of constant supervision, because the ones I have met are superheroes. So, does anyone know what they do, what salary scale they justify or what they cost against any savings generated or even what medical qualifications they have? I only ask because there seems to be less money for our NHS but plenty for a new post, vehicles and support staff.
I learnt this stuff when I was child! Still back in the 60’s we had common sense!!
