UPDATED: Emergency services are this evening attending a fire at a property in St Thomas’ Street, Ryde.
Several appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance alongside Police and Ambulance crews.
UPDATE @ 18:51 – Five fire appliances from Ryde, Newport and Sandown plus the Incident Command Unit have responded to the incident at a residential property at the bottom of St Thomas’ Street, near to the junction with the Esplanade.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the semi-detached property to tackle the flames. The fire is understood to have started in the kitchen.
IslandEcho understands that the property belongs to an elderly couple, who have been seen to by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Two ambulances and an ambulance service officer have responded.
St Thomas’ Street has been closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – Two appliances have now left the scene as well as the Incident Command Unit.
It is understood the occupants of the house have been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment, however the extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
UPDATE @ 19:30 – One fire appliance remains at the scene alongside Police, however St Thomas’ Street has now reopened to traffic.
Around 25 firefighters responded to the incident after receiving a 999 call at around 17:50 this evening. The incident has been brought to a close.
UPDATE @ 20:15 – It is understood the two elderly owners of the property were carried from the house by firefighters with oxygen masks applied to assist their breathing.
A total of 6 people have been treated by paramedics, two at the scene. The other 4 have been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
