Firefighters from Sandown and Shanklin tackled a ‘deliberate’ fire at the derelict Cygnet Hotel last night (Tuesday).
Crews from Sandown and Shanklin were called to the former hotel on Carter Street following a report of smoke issuing from the building just before 19:30 yesterday.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a single hose reel jet to extinguish the fire on the ground.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were called to the scene, it is believed the fire had been started deliberately.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service left the scene following the stop message at 20:20.
A spokesperson from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Anyone with information should call 101 quoting reference INC-20240409-1765 of 9th April.”
It’s about time these derelict Hotels were demolished
better to see a blank canvas than a pile of rubble

It’s good for people who explore abandoned places but the problem is the people who burn them down some may not be on purpose and some are and I personally have explored multiple places across shanklin and sandown, However there are many homeless people who stay in them and rely on abandoned properties for shelter and warmth if these properties got destroyed you would see many more people on the streets.It’s the people go and burn the places down is the problem that needs sorting
