Fears that a large fire had broken out in a multi-storey building on Nelson Street in Ryde prompted a significant response from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service earlier this afternoon (Thursday).
6 appliances from Ryde, East Cowes, Newport and Shanklin – plus the Aerial Ladder Platform from Ryde – were mobilised to the scene between Castle Street and Melville Street at around 12:35 following reports of smoke issuing from a window.
However, when the first crews arrived on scene it was discovered that the small fire had already been extinguished. Crews were stood down within 10 minutes with many appliances still en-route to Ryde.
