A 23-year-old man has been arrested after he led Police on a pursuit in Ryde late this morning (Sunday), with officers finding a young child in a car seat when the vehicle finally came to a stop.
The incident began at around 11:20 when patrolling officers sighted a silver BMW 3-series, which is thought to have been flagged up on the computer as having no insurance or tax.
Police activated blue lights behind the BMW but the driver of the failed to stop. The convertible Beemer is understood to have been pursued along Marlborough Road and Brading Road before doubling back and going through the forecourt of Westridge Garage, turning left to go down Smallbrook Lane.
After a ‘short’ pursuit the driver pulled over just before the railway bridge.
It’s here that shocked officers found a toddler in a car seat on the front passenger seat.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 23-year-old man from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of several offences after providing a positive drugs wipe at the roadside.
The local male has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs and driving a vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.
He remains in police custody this afternoon.

Unfortunately just becoming an average day, the deterrents are quite simply NO deterrent, everyone including police know he will be back on the road very shortly ban or no ban, still taking drugs endangering life again and again. We just go round and round in circles.
Society and civilisation at threat and no sign of a change anytime soon, until real deterrents are put in place. This is a UK problem not just an IOW problem and requires a complete mindset change.
We found ur small pecker
I feel for the children that will be dragged up by this nasty scum….
I don’t understand why you would try to run on a island.
You ain’t getting far unless you’ve got 1 arm
I see what you did there. That was my first thought too
Ah, another accident with drugs and a toddler… so I guess magistrates will be as harsh as with the last guy – who himself got the same sentence as a 19yo who was riding a scooter after just a beer, lol, because 10kg scooter is same danger as 2000kg car and a toddler inside ;)))
Agree, also legal drivers who make mistakes are dealt with worse too, minor speeding, bald tyre etc and you get increased insurance, can loose licence, loose you’re job etc. Yet those with no licence, dangerous driving, drug/alcohol,no insurance, who put children at risk, police pursuit etc will just get a ban (but don’t have licence in first place) £85 fine ( get that for parking penalty in some carparks).
Me thinks Social Services should be interested in this- expect more going on. Don’t have such a car if can’t afford what goes with it.
Shame the computer does not flag up vehicles with no MOT
The Computer would have a field day.
But seeing as you need an MOT, to get tax ..if a car hasn’t got an MOT, when the tax is due… It won’t be taxed and therefore will get flagged…
& Why wouldn’t the computer flag a car with no valid MOT … it’s all on the same database….
Whatever happened to the local Bobby getting his note pad out and walking
down Roads checking vehicle registrations!, too much hard work.
Instead every year, Plod just keep wanting more council tax money from all
Households, when they could easily earn the money.
Employ a person to walk the streets and check.
Just imagine what you could do with all those £1,000 fines for having no
MOT
Appreciate what you mean but if a car is parked without an MOT then what is the crime? If it has no tax then should be SORN
Island Roads and Ryde District Steward are aware of a van that has no MOT
and has been parked along a Road in Ryde for nearly 4 months now with no MOT
Vans gets used frequently – nothing gets done about it.
Very annoying when returning home from an Hard Days Work not to be able to park
due to illegal vehicles being parked down many roads and streets.
The Island do not know how to Tow away illegal vehicles.
Please name the van
Yep they getaway with it,but you forget MOT by couple of days when you are dealing with terminal family member ,it gets seized, points and fine. I know not an excuse , but those who deliberately do without any care etc always get away with it,if do get fine then Paid by Universal Credit.
So sorry to hear about your family member it must be a very difficult time. I’ve been through a loss and it is devastating.
Do what i do is put a big sticker on his windscreen saying police aware.
I have 100% success where the vehicle becomes legal or disappears.
Google it – Many of them do check for MOT.
Chris they don’t seem bothered about this one.
Island Roads etc know the registration number.
The so called authority Numpties on the Island only seem to
care about booking vehicles who park along sea fronts or in Island charging
Car Parks.
They don’t care about illegal vehicles being used or parked down island
Roads or Streets.
The truth is, this is just the sort that claim poverty, whilst affording and often growing and supplying drugs all from a state assisted and paid for rented home with all c.tax paid, free food for the lot, free prescriptions, and dental care, and can afford a car, but chooses not to pay for things it can’t get for free.
Low life and the clone will grow up likely even worse with such a ‘doting’ dad and likely useless womb owner muver.
Another one, I rest my case on my comment earlier about smack snort swill drivers on a different comments page
What a total dumb ass. Driving with a baby in the car having taken shitty drugs. What the hell is wrong with people who do this. He should be fined heavily and banned from driving for a long time. Seems to be the younger generation think it’s perfectly ok to either drink or take drugs or both then drive. IT’S SO NOT.
They don’t care about the kids, they just have another deliberate one every year so they can claim more benefits for it. As far as the car is concerned, they are never insured, they would never be able to afford to insure a car like. That’s why police need to do spot checks especially on roaring boy racers and modernized cars that are made to deliberately pop and bang along the road. It’s happening all day long so they must all be poncing off benefits, that’s why our disabled benefits and our pensions are being stopped, because there are now so many taking the piss out of the system the money is has to come from somewhere
The appalling attitude to the child’s life by the driver, driving under the influence of drugs is a very disgraceful act and all other implications of this vile act of non concern for the child are so vile that if he is the father throw the bloody book at him!!!!!
No insurance and drug driving while having a young child in the car. You could not find a clearer example of selfish irresponsible behaviour.
Should never be allowed alone with a child ever again.
Absolutely no mention of an arrest for child endangerment then, which in my view is so much worse than the rest of the listed causes for arrest, and those are bad enough. Someone who can put their own need to escape the law, and its consequences before the welfare and safety of a small child is appalling behaviour.
I can only hope that this case has been passed on to Social Services safeguarding team.
Totally agree, there is a woman who stops at county ground, green lane in Shanklin about 8 -8.30am to smoke cannabis (smelt it strongly when i walked past with my dog) then she drives off with a toddler in the car. I want to report it but not sure how to go about it, hopefully police check these comments out.
Silly grass hope u get bad vibes
Let us hope that someone (God knows who!) with some gumption and a spine will take-up the apparent epidemic of young island drivers-cum-parents with serious misuse of drugs and/or alcohol issues and deal with these matters with the urgency required.
Various draconian punishments come to mind that would, hopefully, dissuade others from falling into this trough of despond.
Perhaps dangling convicted ‘Herbert’s’ (like this one) by his testicles whilst tethered naked and upside-down over the cliffs at The Needles would attract sufficient worldwide publicity to convince similar ‘Herberts’ to behave themselves.
More quality scum bet his family proud of him..
