If you have ever thought of playing bowls there is a chance to try this historic game at Newport Bowls Club very soon.
The club will be holding an open day on Sunday 29th May, between 10:00 and 17:00. Bowls England is also sponsoring a campaign to encourage people to take up the sport.
Newport Bowls Club has been in existence for just over 100 years and it has been at its current location in Seaclose Park for 80 of those. Prior to this, facilities were at the ground now belonging to the Eight Bells public house in Carisbrooke.
If you decide to become a club member, facilities are available from mid-April until the end of September, for this pastime which is for all ages and includes less able-bodied people. A combination of leisure and competition is there for everyone with this sport being a gentle one which helps everyone maintain fitness levels.
Currently, competitions are available for men, with midweek and Saturday leagues, and a weekly league is run for women. Newport often hosts touring teams in various competitions. These matches are usually played as a mixed fixture for both men and women.
This club would like to welcome new players from across the Island as membership is not restricted to those living in the Newport area. If you would like to try this sport on 29th May it would be helpful if you could wear flat shoes – but all bowling equipment including the woods will be provided.
Council parking at Seaclose Park is currently free at weekends.
