The closure of the High Street and a number of temporary traffic lights in the area is causing delays for motorists in Sandown this week.
High Street is to remain closed for around the next 6 weeks to allow for the installation of fibre optic cables for WightFibre.
At the same time, 4-way temporary traffic lights are in operation at the end of Avenue Road for fibre works, with a 2-way set just around the corner on Culver Parade for water works.
From next Monday (24th) until around 14th February, the one-way system along the Esplanade will be reversed so that vehicles can travel from Culver Parade/Avenue Road, down to the Esplanade and along to Pier Street to join Beachfield Road, avoiding the closure on the High Street.
Part of Pier Street will be closed off, meaning access to the Pier and revetment will be via the northern end of the Esplanade.

Can’t help but feel sorry for the remaining shopkeepers – those that have survived two years of covid are now faced with another threat to their livelihood. I doubt if Wightfibre (who will profit from this) will compensate them. The same goes for other businesses in other towns in the island. Are the interests of Wightfibre really so important?
That’s right, mid January, Sandown High Street would be bustling with shoppers spending thousands of pounds (not in total but per transaction) on quality merchandise in local shops.
The pointless lights on the roundabout are already a pain.
with this on top my bus journeys to and from work are going to be a complete nightmare.
Aren’t the cables going underneath the pavement? Why do they have to shut the roads to dig up the pavement?
