UPDATED: Emergency services are currently attending a serious road traffic collision involving two vehicles on The Downs between Sandown and Newport this afternoon, which has resulted in the death of one person.
Three appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, two from Ryde and one from Newport – are in attendance alongside the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance at the scene between the junction of Knighton and the junction of Lime Kiln Shute on a fast downhill section of Downend Road.
Two ambulance crews are also in attendance as well as the rarely used Jumblance, which can transport several casualties. Two doctors have also been deployed to the incident.
UPDATE @ 16:22 – It has been confirmed that one person has died as a result of their injuries.
Island Echo understand a number of other people have suffered serious injuries in the collision, which happened just before 15:20 this afternoon, as reported by Island Echo through Twitter.
Casualties are said to have been trapped and firefighters are working alongside their colleagues to extract those involved.
The road has been closed in both directions and will be closed for a number of hours.
UPDATE @ 17:55 – A second air ambulance has attended the scene this afternoon, indicating the seriousness of the injuries sustained by the other patients involved in the collision.
