Firefighters from Newport, Cowes and Ventnor are tackling an outbuilding fire in Gurnard this morning (Saturday). 3 appliances and a water carrier are on scene in a field off Rew Street, where smoke can be seen rising from the charred remains of a building. The incident, nested in the trees near the coastal path, began sometime around 01:00. The building has been described as a chalet.
It’s unknown at this stage if any injuries have been sustained and whether any persons have been displaced. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service remains on scene damping down the affected area. It’s been a busy few hours for the fire service following a significant house fire in Ventnor.
UPDATE – It has been confirmed that a derelict building and surrounding undergrowth were involved in the fire, with firefighters in breathing apparatus sets using hose reels to extinguish it. Crews dampened down the scene, using thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no remaining hotspots before delivering community fire safety materials to neighbouring addresses. They stood down at around 03:00. This photo, supplied to Island Echo, shows the extent of the blaze at its height.
