A Newport man jumped behind the wheel of his car whilst more than 3x the drink-drive limit, before then crashing into a garden, because he fancied a Richie’s Diner breakfast after a night of heavy drinking.
Luke Spary, 27, of Worsley Road, crashed his Audi A3 on St George’s Way, Newport on the morning of 9th April this year, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday that Spary had spent around 8 hours drinking the night before the crash and caught a taxi home. However, the next morning he decided to drive to Lake with a friend to enjoy breakfast at the popular Richie’s Diner.
Around a mile into the journey from Newport to Lake, a witness saw Spary’s Audi exit the Asda roundabout and drift across to the other side of the road. The course was overcorrected and the A3 left the carriageway altogether before crashing into a fence and coming to rest in a private garden.
Police were called to the scene and the 27-year-old blew 91 at the roadside and later went on to blow 111 on the evidential breathalyser.
Defending, Amy Hosell explained that her client – of no previous convictions – felt fine to drive and displayed no signs of a hangover. Miss Hosell explained that Spary had been driving for 10 years without fault and said that her client was glad no one got hurt.
Magistrates handed down a 26-month driving ban and ordered Luke Spary to complete a 12-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs with a £95 surcharge.
Total tit. Blowing 111 next day, he really must of had a skin full the night before. When will these Muppets learn, alcohol and driving don’t mix!
Blew 91 at the roadside then 111 later at the police station. So it was still going up. That sounds like he was drinking until he left home. If it was from the night before, the reading would be going down, not up.
Anorak here, the reading will go up and down over time dependent on the pyloric valve allowing alcohol, which is a poison, into the system in manageable doses!!!
Whatever is happening on the island at the moment. Has something been put in the drinking water. So many accidents and incidents .
Too many Piss heads on our roads now get them off
Give life bans for drink driving. 18 months and a few hundred pounds fine is crap.
WTF, I’m getting tired of reading about drunk drivers! I personally don’t give a shit if you crash! But I do care when you involve innocent people, do it when there is no possibility of anyone else being on the roads, if you want to Kill yourselves go ahead you only have one life and believe me it is precious!! What is wrong with you??
Oh my goodness, another one! What on earth is happening to people’s brains. This is never justifiable.
If the registration number is correct being OV53LXH then why is it shown on the DVLA site as ‘Vehicle details could not be found’ something is not right.

Maybe it is because it is written off, and maybe to stop people like you being nosey!! Why else would you go on dvla and try find the information, you sado with nothing better to do, i bet you got blisters on the palms of your hand through boredom!
