A Newport man who had never had a driving lesson and only had a provisional licence has been banned from driving for 12-months after crashing his parents Volvo.
Ewan Mattick, 18, of Albany View in Newport, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and use a motor vehicle without third party insurance when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last week (Friday 25th August).
Prosecuting, Lauren Stone, told the court that at around 15:40 on 10th August, Mattick decided to take his parents car – a Volvo XC90 – for a drive, despite the fact he didn’t hold a licence and had never completed a single driving lesson.
Just metres down the road, Mattick – travelling at what he later said was around 30mph – crashed into the rear of an Audi, which in turn was shunted into the back of a Skoda. Both of these involved vehicles were parked.
There was significant damage caused to the Swedish family motor. The vehicles airbags were also deployed.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that Mattick had already had the embarrassment of explaining to his parents the situation and that he had already handed over some money to his parents and those involved as a result of the incident.
Magistrates handed Mattick a 12-month ban for the offence of driving with no insurance. For the offence of driving without a licence the 18-year-old had his licence endorsed.
He was fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.

So didn’t have a license anyhow and punishment is only- still doesn’t have a licence !.
Must have been pissed. Any teen with a provisional can get to then end of the road without hitting parked cars. Got very lucky.
Surely he should have been charged with theft of motor vehicle aswell, or did the parents give him permission?
Would have been the wise choice, I doubt their insurance will pay out.
What on earth is that gobbledygook all about. Can anyone interpret?
Rant away Kev. Run free, unhindered by grammar or sense.
That’s not what I meant when I said “stroke me, daddy”
If they knew the owner should have been reported for Allowing or Permitting so looks like they didnt know but still should have been reported for TWOC.
A comment on the story from one of the car owners says they haven’t received any money from this lad towards the damage.
There is no mention that the courts have ordered the lad to pay compensation to the owners of the vehicles either.
I would be angered if I had to claim on my insurance to pay for this idiots stupidity while he got away without paying for the damage he caused, plus hours on the phone or filling out claim forms and taking the vehicle to get quotes and needing a hire car while repaired.
I feel he got off too lightly.
You should try this out for yourself and see if you can get it to work in your next year with your own money and then you can get it to the next year with the same kind that you’re getting now because it won’t take that many people for a long term relationship to get you and your wife back together for your future relationship to work and get back on your money so it will not go down to that money but it’s not a lot to lose you if you’re getting a good job or you have to get back on the right side and you have to get a lot more time and you have a lot more money to get back on the right path and you can do that if you’re going through that money will go down and then you’ll have a better job but if you’re going back on your money
Where’s the logic in banning someone from driving who took a car and drove it even though he had no licence, no insurance and had never even taken a driving lesson? Obviously not being ‘allowed’ to be driving on the road makes absolutely no difference to him.
So basically didn’t get punished at all because he didn’t have a license in the first place
So why wasn’t he also reported for TWOC ( Taking without owners consent )
The parents missed a trick, they should’ve named him Auto.
