Significant damage has been caused in Ryde as a result of an elderly driver ploughing into a number of parked vehicles. The incident on East Hill Road – which occurred just before 10:20 – has forced the closure of the busy road in both directions this morning (Monday). It’s understood that at least 4 vehicles have been damaged, including a people carrier which has sustained front wing damage; a Mazda 3 that has been shunted off the road and a Mazda 2, which has gone into the rear end of a Mercedes 4×4. Island Echo understands the driver of the Mazda 2 may have suffered a medical episode, which led to the hatchback colliding with several cars before coming to a rest in the back of the Mercedes. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has 1 fire appliance from Ryde in attendance, conducting scene safety.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is also in attendance, with paramedics currently tending to the driver of the Mazda. He has been able to walk to the ambulance with the assistance of a walking stick. Recovery of the vehicles is being arranged with the road expected to reopen within the next hour or so. East Hill Road is currently closed in both directions between Alexandra Road and The Strand.
UPDATE @ 12:22 – East Hill Road has now re-opened in both directions.
