A busy road in Newport is blocked in both directions this morning (Tuesday) as a result of a car smashing into a parked vehicle and rolling onto its side.
Police and paramedics are currently on scene at Whitepit Lane, outside Furze Brake, where 3 vehicles have been damaged. Firefighters have also attended the scene.
Island Echo understands a grey Volkswagen Golf Plus was travelling towards Carisbrooke when the driver failed to give way to an oncoming Nissan van at around 09:20. As a result, the Golf crashed into a parked white Citroen C3.
In dramatic style, the VW then spun and rolled, smashing into the van before coming to rest on its side across the carriageway. White paint inside the Golf poured out over the interior.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a critical care paramedic and an operational commander on scene. Police have also responded to the incident.
Whitepit Lane is closed in both directions as those involved are checked over and recovery of the vehicles is arranged.
Southern Vectis’ Route 38 buses are on diversion.
UPDATE @ 11:24 – A 30-year-old woman from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving. She remains in custody.
The vehicles involved have now been recovered and Whitepit Lane has reopened to all traffic.
