Recent polling suggests the Isle of Wight would vote to remain in the European Union were the referendum to be held in 2023.
On 23rd June 2016, the Isle of Wight voted by a margin of 62% to 38% to leave the EU. 49,173 Island residents voted leave; 30,207 voted remain.
However, were the referendum to be held today, polling data suggests only 41% would vote leave, compared with 59% who would vote remain. Assuming the turnout to be the same as in 2016, in 2023, 32,546 Islanders would vote leave and 46,834 would vote remain.
The figures are based on polling throughout the UK, using a sample of 10,000 voters.
On the Isle of Wight, it is estimated that 31% of the constituency ‘strongly agree’ that the United Kingdom was wrong to leave the EU, whereas 17% ‘mildly agree’. The total agreeing that the decision was wrong is 48%.
Conversely, 24% ‘strongly disagree’ and 10% ‘mildly disagree’ – 34% of the constituency. 18% neither agreed nor disagreed.
This makes the Isle of Wight the 549th most ‘Bregretful’ of the 632 constituencies in England. Scotland and Wales.
Nationally, 54% believe Brexit to have been a bad choice, compared with 28% who believe the decision to have been the correct one. Only 3 constituencies – all in Lincolnshire – would be likely to vote leave were there to be a rerun of the referendum.

What the public must remember and bear in mind is the rest of the EU didn’t want us to go, nor the U.S, with the President urging the UK to stay.
Then we have to ask ourselves WHY?
Was it that they are all ‘oh so kindly’ and only ‘cared’ about our well being?
OR was it more a case of they were gaining from the UK ‘being in’?
So as operation ‘fear’ was intensified to try to frighten us to ‘stay’, and it didn’t work, then these people are clearly going to make it as hard as possible now we have left, one reason being to ‘prevent’ other ‘shaky’ countries doing similar as contagion is what the EU fears most.
So, whilst it will obviously be ‘hard’ for a while, the end game is what matters, hence we made the right choice.

IF you asked anyone ‘today’ whether the UK should have fought in the last war, most all would say yes.
And at the time, most people would have agreed it was the right thing to do.
However, ask the wife, parents, or family of a soldier or a civilian once the war had started , if blown to bits, blinded for life, or any other life changing horror which ‘befell’ so many they would likely have had ‘more’ doubts.
But the fear of what would have happened IF we never did ‘anything’ could have been much worse for the British people.
Of COURSE there will be problems for a while, and the ‘good’ as with war takes longer to show, but as with the declaration of war the end game and FUTURE is what matters, but no one can prove that yet

Nobody has the opportunity to join the EU. The unelected prime minister Gordon Brown refused to let the public have a say, he decided to just go ahead and sign to commit us to the EU.

Good for you. The campaign to rejoin is already underway so all is not lost. Of course, we won’t be able to rejoin on the same advantageous terms that Maggie secured, but the loss of the GB Pound will be a small price to pay. Looking forward to freedom of movement within Europe and friction-less trade.
Anyone at this stage who thinks it was a good idea are deluded it clearly wasn’t a good idea. Speak to any buisness owners from construction to manufacturing to retail to hospitality and they will all tell you the same thing that brexit has had a negative effect on their business.

perhaps remainers should realise -we would never have even considered leaving the EU, if they had not decided to bully us into their way of doing things – the uk would have embraced full membership and currency integration in the fullness of time – however, that will never happen now, because of the EU attitude towards the UK – and remainers are just as bad as the EU

The way the EU has behaved and treated us since has only made me want to leave more ,just because its been hard (mainly because of them) shouldn’t mean we give up and rejoin , where would we be now if they had that attitude in the 1st and 2nd world wars . One, real, genuine, actual, benefit of leaving the EU for ordinary people.
By that I don’t mean vague notions like “taking back control”, I mean real, tangible benefits.
You can’t, because there aren’t any.
Ride-on lawnmowers, mobility scooters and golf buggies will not need motor insurance. British motorists avoid a £50 car insurance increase as a result.
And that’s good? People here often yell in comments how even cyclists should have insurance, let alone more heavy and electrified mobility scooters – if I were to believe that general public is represented by Island echo commenters I’d say yours is terrible news! 😉
Here’s a few, the EU can no longer overturn our own courts decisions, the EU can no longer make up laws that we have to abide by and most importantly of all, we no longer have to pay billions of pounds to the EU to subsidize their stupid schemes like bailing out Greece. That’s just for starters.
The best reason THUS FAR, is we don’t have to allow EU migrants here.
The fact countless amounts are arriving is because the ‘will’ to prevent such is not there, but we could IF our Gov wasn’t so desperate to fill our nation to third world levels of bodies, rid the land of the NOW illegals.
And we can criticise such whereas when legal, we weren’t allowed to moan about them being here.
You can control your borders even when inside EU easily. It was ALWAYS the choice of UK government to allow people to come and work here indefinitely. By default FoM allows travel to any member state for only up to 3 months.
On the other side of that coin we lost the right to appeal decisions of UK judges (and people here often moan about our justice system) to the EU court, we no longer get a VETO vote to stop any EU law (we just rarely decided to use it, huh, it’s almost like our politicians agreed with most of those laws and just said how bad they’re to play the domestic public, who knew…) and no access to research grants, ESA telescopes, EU startup money etc. That’s just for starters.
So what happened to the £350 million, that would cover the NHS rises wouldn’t it?

Public were lied to about the benefits of BREXIT. Outrageous lies as usual by government officials with zero consequences to themselves. Not surprising. Brexit is a disaster
Always going to be, the government did not want us to leave. It’s a disaster because of the government not because it’s a bad idea. There are a few EU counties that are not members yet are doing very well.
Let’s Get One Thing Straight. We Have B.R.I.N.O which is short for Brexit In Name Only. The Government and Civil Service have been dragging their heals over ridding us of thousands of E.U. regulations and thus have not given us what we voted for.
It took years (and a lot of money) to implement some EU regulations.
Now you must create modern alternatives because you cannot simply rollback to what you had before: technology marches on and old UK regulations are often insufficient in many areas.
This time we must do it ourselves though, no shared expertise or resources, and we – not EU – will be responsible for keeping it up to date, which will cost money of course.
So it will take some time (and money spent on bureaucracy!) to create new ones. And then some more time (and money again!) to actually implement them. Civil servants are the biggest winners here, tax payers though are in a for a big receipt 😉

Where is the Island Deal that Bob Seely promised in 2019? He said that the EU prevented the Isle of Wight from being classed as an Island -thus making it entitled to additional support. We left in 2020. Where is that Island Deal he promised in his manifesto? Is he too busy skiing in Davos? Or is he too busy voting to allow privatised water companies to dump raw sewage into our seas?
