A former Thai restaurant in Shanklin, which shut down after a dismal food hygiene rating, could be transformed into a ‘much-needed’ 3-bedroom apartment.
Nick Spyker – the owner of many businesses in The Bay area – has submitted a planning application to the Isle of Wight Council for a conversion of the lower ground floor of Tudor Rose, 59 High Street in Shanklin, into a residential property with a garden.
There used to be a Thai restaurant at the property, which is well known for its mock Tudor facade. Most fondly remembered as Siam Pearl, the property then became Planet Buffet and was most recently known as Thai Mukda.
Thai Mukda closed at the end of 2023 after being handed a one-star food hygiene rating from Environmental Health officers.
A Planning and Heritage Statement states:
“Tudor Rose No 59 is vacant and has been so for a considerable time.
“The lower ground floor is a redundant commercial area and, therefore, it is proposed to convert this into an apartment with a garden area.
“As the apartment proposed is within the town centre, there are no requirements for car parking to be provided. However, cycle racks will be provided within the rear garden area.”

In recent weeks, Mr Spyker has submitted a number of planning applications, including plans to transform part of the Sandown Hotel into 4 flats and convert the former Kings House pub into a 4-bedroom house.
County Hall’s public consultation on application 25/00601/FUL ends on 20th June and a decision has been scheduled for 17th July.
