Department, a vibrant art centre in the heart of Ryde, is expanding its team of volunteers following strong growth since opening earlier this year.
The venue, which launched in March, has quickly earned a reputation for fringe theatre and its popular rooftop café-bar. Founded by carnival company Shademakers UK, Department includes a mix of theatre and gallery space, rehearsal and meeting rooms, artist studios and creative workshops.
Volunteering roles are available during both daytime and evening hours, with flexibility to suit individual schedules. Daytime volunteers work on the ground floor in the shop, reception and exhibitions area, while evening shifts typically involve ushering for theatre shows and other live events.
Zoë Barker, Volunteers Manager, has said:
“When we welcomed our first group of volunteers to Department it was a game changer. They’ve all fitted in so well and their dedication, support and enthusiasm have really helped Department to grow and thrive.
“As things continue to get busier we’ve reached a point where we’re now looking to further expand our volunteers team.”
Volunteer Caroline Read has said:
“When you volunteer at Department you become part of a family. The atmosphere is great, it’s an exciting place to work and the help the volunteers give is greatly valued.
“I volunteer in both the shop and for evening events and both have added so much enjoyment to my life.”
Volunteer Jacqui Adams adds:
“From serving in the shop, to showing visitors around the building or talking to visitors in the Poo Museum, it’s a fantastic experience.
“I recommend volunteering at Department to anyone interested in people, community, creativity and history.”
To help potential volunteers find out more, Department is holding two informal information events. Attendees will be taken on a tour of the building, hear more about what’s on offer, and have the opportunity to ask questions over tea and biscuits.
The events will take place on:
-
Saturday (6th September) from 14:30–15:30
-
Thursday (11th September) from 10:30–11:30
Anyone interested should email [email protected] to book their place, specifying which date they would like to attend. Those unable to attend can enquire about alternative times or visit www.department-ryde.org/volunteer to complete an online form.
Department is located at 29-30 Cross Street, Ryde, PO33 2AA and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00–17:30, and Sundays from 10:00–15:00.
