UPDATED: A cyclist has been seriously injured in a road traffic collision in Sandown this evening (Thursday).
A HEMS helicopter is en-route to Fort Street car park to airlift the male cyclist to a mainland hospital after he came off his bicycle on Avenue Road at just before 17:15.
Witnesss have said that a motorist opened a car door on the main road, causing the incident. The casaulty is said to be ‘confused and stressed’.
Avenue Road has been closed in both directions from the junction with The Broadway. Motorists are being diverted locally.
UPDATE @ 18:30 – The Thames Valley Air Ambulance has landed at the recreation park off Fort Street, with HEMS Doctors and Paramedics transferred by an ambulance officer’s car to the scene a short distance away.
The incident has involved a silver Ford Galaxy.
UPDATE @ 18:40 – Police are appealing for 2 witnesses, who may hold vital information to assist officers with their investigation, to come forward.
It is thought 1 vehicle was travelling towards The Broadway and another travelling towards the High Street when the incident occurred at 17:05. Both failed to stop at the scene.
Anyone with information should contact Police as a matter of urgency by calling 101.
Avenue Road remains closed and is likely to be so for several hours.
UPDATE @ 19:40 – The male casualty has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital tonight, 2-and-half hours after the incident occurred.
It is thought the man is local to the area.
Avenue Road remains under a hard road closure as investigations continue. Barletts Service Station have been called to the scene to recover the Ford Galaxy.
UPDATE @ 20:38 – Avenue Road has reopened to traffic in both directions.
The unnamed man’s condition is described as ‘serious’.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have this morning confirmed that the 28-year-old male cyclist, who was riding a black and white bike, suffered a serious head injury and is currently in a critical condition in Southampton General Hospital.
The driver of the car was uninjured and is helping police with their enquiries.
Investigating officer PC Dom Green hassaid:
“I would like to encourage any witnesses who have not already spoken to us to come forward as a matter of urgency as they may have vital information which can assist us with this investigation.”
