A 2-car crash is causing significant delays on a main road between Newport and Sandown this afternoon (Wednesday).
Police, firefighters and paramedics are currently on scene on the A3056 at Arreton, near where the cycle path crosses the main road, having been called out at around 14:15.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, including an Operational Commander and Critical Care Paramedic, are tending to those involved in what Police have described as a ‘serious’ collision. Firefighters are also on scene.
Island Echo is told that the 2 vehicles involved have collided head-on.
Traffic in the area is very heavy, with delays in both directions. Southern Vectis Route 8 buses are currently diverting.
UPDATE @ 14:40 – The A3056 is now closed in both directions between Downend Road and Watery Lane.
Diversion routes such as Downend, Godshill and Newchurch/Winford/Knighton are very heavy as a result. Motorists should avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 15:15 – Police have confirmed that a man is suspected to have sustained serious injuries.
The road is therefore to remain closed for the foreseeable future.
UPDATE @ 21:00 – The road has now reopened.
UPDATE THURSDAY – Police have issued an appeal for information following yesterday’s crash, which has see an elderly male sustain potentially life-threatening injuries.
