The ladies of Cowes WI in the days before social distancing

Cowes Women’s Institute (WI) is celebrating turning 10 and despite the current lockdown members are being encouraged to celebrate the milestone.

Over the past 10 years, Cowes WI has gone from strength to strength. It was set up in April 2010 by Zoe Stroud, who was keen to join a WI in the area but realised there wasn’t one in Cowes. Zoe thought it would be beneficial to ladies of Cowes if one existed, so she set to work to recruit members and after a positive response Cowes WI was created with around 60 members.

Over the years the group have had a variety of speakers and events. Sometimes controversial and pushing the boundaries, but all with the aim to educate women and provide a social environment for friendship and laughter.

Zoe, the current President, said:

“When I had the idea of setting up Cowes WI 10 years ago I never imagined it would be as popular and successful as it has been. Everyday I am grateful for the friendships made and the great things we have done in 10 years.”

To celebrate Cowes WI turning 10 a birthday party afternoon tea was planned and previous members across the years were going to attend.

Zoe continues:

“It is such a shame that this brilliant milestone is being overshadowed and we are not able to celebrate as planned. We will however mark the occasion as soon as it is safe to do so. However we are encouraging the ladies to raise a glass to us and to share their Cowes WI memories”

In the meantime Cowes WI have set up a WhatsApp group to keep in contact and it is providing much comfort to many plus lots of funny videos to make the ladies laugh.

Meetings are on hold for now, but the group will return bigger and better!
