On the anniversary of Russia’s barbaric and deplorable invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian national flag was raised on Friday at County Hall.
The poignant moment of reflection was attended by several Ukrainians who have made the Island their home since the start of the conflict.
Hearing them sing their national anthem and seeing their pain made the short ceremony highly emotional for those present.
The national flag of Ukraine now flies proudly alongside the Union Flag in a symbolic gesture of support for the people of Ukraine.
Councillor Chris Jarman, who welcomed 2 Ukrainian families into his family home, said the commemoration was an opportunity to pay tribute to the courage of the Ukrainian people.
He said:
“Raising the flag is our way of showing solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
“It’s important that we stand together with those affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. By raising the Ukrainian flag, we are sending a clear message of support, especially to those Ukrainians who have chosen to make our island their home in the past year.
Article continues below this advertisement “My thanks go to all those local families who have opened their doors and their hearts to our Ukrainian guests over the past 12 months, providing shelter, support and a home in their darkest hours.”
One of the Island’s Ukrainian guests said:
“We thank your country and your Island for the love and support shown. Each and every Ukrainian is very overwhelmed and grateful.”

I know we have to support Ukraine but as Zelensky said he was disappointed how many men old enough to fight for Ukraine ran. Why are we paying to support these men in our country when a lot of them were to cowardly to fight for their country.
