The Isle of Wight Council is proposing yet another parking price hike with all tariffs set to increase by 10p per hour from 1st July 2022 – just in time for the summer holidays.
The Alliance Administration has this week released its Budget for 2022/23 with £3million of savings sought.
To help boost the Council’s coffers, motorists are once again being stung with an increase in the cost of parking.
Up to 1 hour in a Long Stay car park or on-street will soon cost £1.80, whilst up to 30 minutes in a Short Stay car park will cost £1.20 – plus fees for those paying by phone. Short stay on-street parking will rise to £1.10 for 30 minutes.
It is anticipated that the parking charge increase will generate an extra £98,900 for the local authority.
The Council says work will be done to promote more widely the wide range of permits the council offers which provide better value for money to residents than paying on a casual basis for parking.

Why not! We have to cover their pay rises and pensions somehow, don’t worry about the rest of us struggling along. I am sure the council tax will be reduced to help us.
stop paying out £1.4 million in taxi fares for SEND kids then – the parents should be paying for their kids to go to school, not the rest of us – leeches.
What a rip off! £1.70 an hour is bad enough.
I believe it’s £1.90 an hour in Puckpool car park!
Parked in Swanage on Sunday. It was £1, yes £1 for 24 hours parking. No wonder the place had loads of people walking around, going in shops and eating places and clearly spending money.
Its like that in most of Cornwall if not free very cheap. This council don’t care about the people or the island just them selves.Quick to take and very slow to give. Greedy greedy bunch.
When’s it all gonna stop.
Where do we find the money for all these increases. A few pence here, the odd quid there, they all add up. There WILL come a point where the paying public say, right that enough.
If you drive by county hall, look in thier car park. All them white cars are majority “pool cars” yes guess who pays for them. Fuel, servicing, road tax, insurance even the electric ones. Us mugs that’s who.
On that note, their car park is not that full as most still working from home. So open it up to the rest of us to park free in Newport.
So increase price to those less able to pay, promote permits to reduce costs that can, force local business to close and increase out of town retail with free parking – just to make an estimated £98,000?. Why does this council only support the middle class and above. Treats itself at Council tax expense new electric vans/cars and so called consultants. Taxis for SEND, used to be Group 90 and Wightbus in house. Every year bigger C/tax rise but less essential services Inc homeless, needy children,no Youth Services, care for elderly. Don’t increase parking reduce it- the increase town shops reopening would easily make more in business rates.
I love that the machine is solar powered cutting their running cost yet the bill still goes up.
Local businesses will suffer yet again, the public can not afford to shop in Town.
The likes of Asda ect have free parking, so will be the obvious choice for shopping.
With Food ,Gas and Electric, Petrol, Road Tax, Council Tax all going up.
and my pension only going up 3.1%, after working full time since the age of 14 and saving to buy my House.
Were am i going to get the extra Money from, i guess i’m supposed to just sit in and wait to Die 🙁
Well even that cost is going up …
But hey don’t worry the council worker’s will be OK with all the extra in their pension pot, probably have the finest walnut casket lined with silk ….
Us mere cash cow’s will have a body bag and direct cremation!!!!
Oh yes. Those dastardly council workers who work for much less than comparable private workers, who worked tirelessly through the pandemic with zero bonuses or furlough, and who have been offered a 1.75% wage “increase” which is far below even the rate of inflation.
Those same council workers who also live as well as work on the Island, and have to pay for parking, council tax and extortionate ferry fees just like everyone else who calls the island home. It’s definitely their fault, definitely them who you should aim your vitriol.
Greed beyond belief, this place has the most expensive parking anywhere in the country. Still the council won’t be happy until all the local shops close and the towns are turned into “Luxury Holiday Compounds”, then they can really rip people off and the only job you can get would be a cleaning job for the rich. Welcome to the “New Island” Boris’s Bots.
A few years ago when I was signing on (yes I know booooooo!) I was at the job centre and was talking about the lack of employment, and was talking about how a lot of jobs are seasonal making the matter worse. The advisor said that jobs being seasonal does not affect the job market. I’m fairly sure it does if they’re closed down for a period of the year. It’s only gonna get worse too, so good luck people. Digby is right about cleaning for the rich.
Parking permits down most Island Roads would raise extra revenue.
Therefore the Council could freeze Council Tax increases.
Many Households are filling up streets with Cars and Company vehicles and are not
Paying anything to park these vehicles.
Therefore many people cannot get to park their own vehicles when arriving home from work.
So your soultion is to make everyone pay to park thier car outside thier home in the middle of a rising living cost crisis?
Tavistock, Devon, tourist destination.
Long Stay (10 Hours Max) Car Park
Riverside PL19 9AZ Charging Period Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All Day £2.50
All greed greed greed and no give
Why don’t we, the tax payers, get our heads together and plan a day a week where we all, repeat all, do not use council car parks. Let’s hurt them where they hurt us, but harder.
It would never work on this little island.
The people here are to selfish and only think of there selves and are in there own little world.
not from me they won,t never use em..never will
I wouldn’t pay a penny to park in any car park over here just to buy a coffee – there’s nothing else to do in Newport for example – unless you want to play eye spy with my little eye … an empty shop !
While people keep paying these ridiculous charges, they will just keep increasing them. The only way to stop it is to refuse to pay to park. Don’t give them a penny
More stealth infationary taxation to pay for council stupidity.
Stop wasting money that’s not yours.
