A number of students at the Isle of Wight College have been told to self isolate following a positive COVID-19 case within the college community.
An email has been sent out tonight (Thursday) confirming the news, stating that a member of the college community has tested positive for the virus.
The Isle of Wight College says it is working closely with the relevant public health bodies to monitor and contain the situation.
A ‘small number’ of individuals who have been in close, prolonged contact with the person who has tested positive have been informed. They will now stay at home for 14 days.
It is unknown if the positive test has been confirmed in a teacher or student, but it’s understood the hospitality department is affected.
The college remains open as normal and students should continue to attend if they feel well.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Debbie Lavin, principal at the Isle of Wight College, has today said:
“We understand the anxiety this news will cause our college community and I want to reassure staff, parents and students that we have stringently followed government guidelines and are working closely with the public health team.

Chair of governors, Dr Nicholas England DL, has said he is absolutely assured the management team are effectively implementing agreed procedures and he is confident the college remains safe for staff and students.
Seems that nowhere will be safe this coming Winter from the scourge of this terrible virus. The young will inadvertently spread this to the older in society if absolute care is not stringently adhered to. A most awful Christmas for many now.
Older people can spread it too you know. Especially amongst those who wear masks as chin warmers in the shops and on the buses. Every young person I’ve seen has worn their mask properly.
Want to know a little secret you two? You can not hide from a virus. Every single person is likely to get this virus at some point. If not this year, then the next, or the next. It’s not going anywhere. A lot of viruses have been around for thousands of years. It’s a shame but that’s reality for you.

For every child and adult who has now caught a simple cold, then, with CV far, far more contagious, it is odds on, that once CV enters a group of people, as we see with catching a cold, handwashing, social distancing measures will NOT prevent the spread of this deadly virus.
Whilst many young will remain unscathed they will spread it to the vulnerable and elderly in society with far more serious life changing or death implications.
IF, and a big IF, we are close to a vaccine, then surely it would make more sense to keep all but essential businesses closed along with schools and Uni’s etc and likely work out cheaper for society in the longer term.

‘Scandemic’, I like that. And they are right, these kids are not sick. It seems that it is mostly old people who are vulnerable and they should be the ones staying in.
